Writer's picture: Krysta RolleKrysta Rolle

For the past few days, I have been typing away on ideas to improve curriculum of academic UAS settings. I have divided my ideas into 5 different categories of topics that I feel are usually missing from many UAS academia settings. Below I have very brief descriptions under the 5 main ideas I have for now. I have a much more detailed writing saved, but I shortened it to keep it to the point.

5 Topics Brief

Flight Crew Management & “Smart” Flight Operations (minimize costs and increase safety)

  • Formal Delegation of Flight Crew Roles,

  • Minimizing Costs of operations,

  • Safety Management System(SMS) visual aid for each mission

Application of UAVs in real world situations for proper solutions

  • Capstone Projects that address real world solutions

  • Individual and Group Collaboration on projects

Understanding of Laws, Regulations, and Ethics

  • Regular Discussion of Ethics vs. Laws/Regulations (just because it's legal does not make it ethical)

  • Ethics needs to be brought up more in the classroom

Metadata Standards & Streamlining Payloads

  • Streamlining workflows saves time and money

  • Standardization of Metadata to make collecting data easier

Supplementary Skills (Knowledge of Software Programs

  • Knowledge of GIS software

  • Knowledge of a coding language

  • Ability to create apps

  • Utilizing Online Logbooks

Next Week:

I will continue to expand on the suggestions that I made above as I continue on with the journal article.
